Beautiful analytics to grow smarter

Our Business Units continually seek out ways to increase resource efficiencies and reduce the impact on the environment.

When we initiated our GreenMT Program in 2010, we focused on managing our own operations sustainably, with minimal environmental impact. Over the years, we have improved energy efficiency in our own operations by focusing on facilities, manufacturing processes, and our global sales and service fleet. Since 2020, we have been using 100 percent renewable electricity in our operations.

Our focus in 2023 was to continue our efforts to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions and to start activities aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions in line with our climate strategy and roadmap. In addition to reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we continue our efforts to reduce the waste generated in our operations and to make progress toward our zero-waste-to-landfill target (less than five percent) by 2025.

The METTLER TOLEDO Climate Strategy

Climate change highlights the need to accelerate actions and look beyond our operations to understand and limit the climate impact across our entire value chain.

In 2021, we committed to near- and long-term Company-wide GHG emissions reductions, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

These targets are consistent with the latest climate science and the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and were approved by SBTi in 2022 (for detailed description of our science-based targets covering Scopes 1, 2, and 3, see below).

The approval of these targets underlines our long-term commitment to taking meaningful action to limit climate change and supports credible collaboration with our suppliers and customers toward decarbonization (see also chapter “Responsible Supply Chain”).

The METTLER TOLEDO Climate Strategy

METTLER TOLEDO has been carbon-neutral in our operations since 2020. In addition, we are focused on reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions across our entire value chain, in line with our science-based targets. Emissions reductions range from material sourcing to manufacturing to our customers’ use of our products.
Scope 1 and 2 emissions stem from our operations. Scope 3 encompasses emissions upstream and downstream from our operations and accounts for the bulk of our emissions.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Similar to other industrial companies, our Scope 3 emissions represent more than 90 percent of our total GHG emissions of approximately 1,000 kilotons CO2e. Our efforts to reduce GHG emissions from our operations (Scope 1 and 2) are on track and we have achieved a 54 percent reduction since 2018 (compared to our 2030 target of 70 percent).  We recognize that more effort is needed to achieve the corresponding target for our Scope 3 emissions, which are still 12 percent above 2019 base year.

Governance Priorities

Near-Term Targets
Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 70% by 2030 from a 2018 base year. Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities, upstream transportation, business travel, employee commuting, and the use of sold products 30% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.

Long-Term / Net Zero Targets
Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2018 base year. Mettler-Toledo International Inc. commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.

Reducing Waste

We have set ambitious waste management and reduction targets for our operating Units. We are on track to achieve our waste management and reduction targets by 2025:
  • Reduce the waste intensity of our operations by 20 percent (compared with 2018).
  • Achieve zero waste to landfill (less than five percent of waste to landfill).

Our total waste decreased by 8 percent in 2023 compared to the prior year. This trend can be attributed to continuous waste reduction improvements by local operating Units as well as lower production volumes. As of 2023, our waste intensity has decreased by 23 percent compared to the 2018 base. Waste sent to landfill was reduced by 20 percent in 2023 and accounted for just under 8 percent of total waste.
